Poodle (Miniature) / Spaniel / Mixed (short coat) Dog

Peanut the Dog needs a home

We are listing Peanut for her current caregiver as a courtesy post in an effort to find her a stable, experienced and loving family.

SPECIAL HOME needed for PEANUT, behaviour experience required:

Peanut is a 4.5 year old female mini poodle/cocker spaniel mix who is fully housetrained and approx. 23 pounds. She's incredibly affectionate and playful, loves to cuddle on the couch and in bed (though she prefers to sleep on the floor in the bedroom). Her favourite activity is playing fetch with her ball outside, she also enjoys a good game of tug indoors. She likes going for leisurely walks and being allowed to stop to sniff everything.

Peanut has a number of behavioural challenges and needs a home that is willing to put in the time to work with her. She has handling issues and growls and snaps (though doesn't bite) when having her harness taken off and she really has a difficult time with grooming due to her sensitivity with having her back end and belly touched. I've used positive reinforcement to get to a place where she can almost tolerate it, though her new owner will need to put in an effort so that she learns to trust them. She is comfortable wearing a soft muzzle which can be utilized for these types of activities. She'll tolerate a bath as long as there's lots of treats to ply her with (she is vocal during her baths with yelping and crying).

She also has resource guarding issues when it comes to items such as socks, high values bones and will growl and snap. The one "trade" item that has worked is Kraft cheese slices.

Peanut is a high anxiety dog, she has a difficult time relaxing and is prone to pacing and barking when there's more than one or two people around. She is currently on Clomicalm (10mg twice daily) to help with this with mild/moderate improvement. She has not had any separation anxiety (whenever I'm leaving I hide a bunch of treats for her). She occasionally gets stress-based colitis and requires a round of Tylosin to help clear it up

She should absolutely not be placed in a home with any children or cats, as she'll lunge and snap at both.

Before I was married and had a baby, I had Peanut in a pretty stable and manageable state.
